How to run Secret Santa online in 3 steps

  1. Type the participants

    Each name and, if you like, their WhatsApp number. Couples in the same group won’t draw each other.

  2. Tap Draw names

    The draw happens right away, and no one gets themselves.

  3. Send it to each person

    Tap WhatsApp next to each name. The message is already typed with who they got.

Have a note for everyone, like the exchange date and gift budget? Write it before drawing: it goes in every message.

Couples, siblings and people who can’t draw each other

Every family has someone who doesn’t want to draw their own husband or sister. That’s what groups are for: put those people in the same group (A, B, C...) and the draw never pairs them.

The only thing you can’t do is make a group with more than half of the people, because then there wouldn’t be enough people outside it for everyone. The screen tells you if that happens.

Does the organizer see the result?

Whoever sends the messages can see the pairs, on any Secret Santa site that doesn’t ask for each person’s email. To help an organizer who is also playing:

  • the drawn names stay hidden on screen, with an eye to show them;
  • the WhatsApp button sends the right message without you opening the name;
  • the list marks who already got theirs, so no one is left out.

One single loop

The draw builds a loop: Anna gets Ben, Ben gets Carla, and so on until the last person, who gets the first. That guarantees no one gets themselves and there are no closed pairs, where two people draw each other and the fun is gone. The randomness comes from the browser’s random number generator.

Nothing stays on a server

Names, phone numbers and the result stay only in your browser. Nothing goes to our server. That’s why, if you close the page, the draw is gone: send the messages before leaving.

Frequently asked questions

How does the online Secret Santa work?

You type each participant’s name and tap Draw names. Each person gets a message, “Your Secret Santa is: ...”, that you send on WhatsApp with one tap or copy to send anywhere.

Can someone draw themselves?

No. The draw never lets anyone get their own name.

How do I stop couples from drawing each other?

Put the couple in the same group, for example Group A. People in the same group won’t draw each other. It also works for siblings or people who live together.

Does the organizer see who drew whom?

Yes, because they send the messages. To avoid seeing by accident, the drawn names stay hidden on screen and only show if you tap the eye. If the organizer is also playing, they can send without looking.

Do I need everyone’s phone number?

No. With a phone number, WhatsApp opens that person’s chat with the message typed. Without one, WhatsApp opens so you can pick the contact. You can also copy the message and send it through another app.

How many people can play?

From 3 to 100 people.

Can I include the gift budget and the exchange date?

Yes. Write it in the Note for everyone, like “exchange on Dec 20, gift up to $30”. The note goes at the end of each person’s message.

Is the draw saved?

No. It happens in your browser and never reaches our server. If you close the page, it’s gone. Send the messages before leaving, or draw again and send everything again.

Is the draw fair?

Yes. It uses the browser’s random number generator, built for cryptography. Everyone forms one single loop: no one ends up in a closed pair, where A gets B and B gets A.
