How to use the counter
Paste or type your text
The box is labeled Your text, and the numbers update as you type.
Read the counts
Characters, Without spaces, Words and Lines sit right under the box.
Compare with the limits
Under Platform limits, each field shows a bar, your count next to the limit, and a note such as “52 left” or “18 over the limit”. When you go over, the bar and the note turn red. When the text fits, tap Copy text.
Characters is the number Instagram’s limits use, with spaces, emojis and line breaks included. Without spaces leaves out spaces and line breaks, which helps with rules outside Instagram, like a school assignment. Words counts groups of characters separated by spaces, so a hashtag or an @mention is one word, and so is an emoji with spaces around it. Lines counts every line, blank ones included. Clear empties the box.
For a bio, paste it exactly as it will look, line breaks and all. The 150 includes them, so a bio split into five short lines spends four characters on the breaks alone. If you write captions in Notes or a document, paste the final version here before it goes to Instagram: spaces left at the end of a line count, even though you can’t see them.
On a phone, press and hold the box to paste. After Copy text, open Instagram, press and hold the caption or bio field and tap Paste. It works the same way on iPhone and Android, and the copy keeps your line breaks and emojis as they are.
Instagram limits
These are the numbers to plan around as of October 2026:
- Caption: 2,200 characters, for photo posts, carousels and Reels. Hashtags and @mentions are part of the caption, so they count too.
- Bio: 150 characters, including line breaks. Links added in the separate Links field of your profile don’t use any of them.
- Name and username: 30 characters each. A username can only use letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
- Hashtags: Instagram’s developer documentation still says 30 per post, but reports since December 2025 say the app now accepts 5 per post and Reel. Plan for 5. A hashtag ends at the first space or punctuation mark, so write #summersale, not #summer-sale.
If you’re over the caption limit, look at links first. A web address in an Instagram caption doesn’t become a clickable link, so it only takes up space. Repeated hashtags and long lists of mentions are the next things to cut.
Instagram changes these numbers from time to time without much notice. Check in the app before posting a text that’s close to the limit.
Emojis, fancy fonts and line breaks
- Emojis. The counter counts what you see. An emoji with a skin tone, a flag, or a family made of several people counts as 1. Behind the picture, though, a family emoji can be several smaller emojis joined together, which is why other counters sometimes show a bigger number. Instagram may count some emojis as 2 or more, so leave a few characters of margin when you’re close to a limit.
- Accented letters. Letters like é, ñ or ç count as 1, the same as any other letter.
- Line breaks. Each one counts as a character, and blank lines count too. A caption with many short lines uses more of the 2,200 than it looks.
- Invisible characters. Some tricks for adding blank lines to Instagram captions paste characters you can’t see but that still count. If the number looks higher than the text, that’s often why.
- Fancy fonts. Text from “fancy font” generators isn’t made of letters. It uses math and symbol characters that look like letters. They count as 1 each here, but some apps count them as 2. Screen readers read them badly or skip them, and a name written with them can be harder to find in Instagram search.
Privacy
The counter runs entirely in your browser. What you type or paste isn’t sent to our servers and isn’t saved anywhere, and reloading the page clears it. Once the page has loaded, it keeps counting even in airplane mode. There’s no account and no daily limit. Our other tools fetch public Instagram posts, and creators who want their posts blocked from them can use the content removal page. The privacy policy explains what those tools handle.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters fit in an Instagram caption?
2,200, the same for photo posts, carousels and Reels. Hashtags and mentions count toward it. Only the first line or two show in the feed before “more”, so put the important part first.
How long can an Instagram bio be?
150 characters, counting spaces, emojis and line breaks. Your name and your username have their own limit of 30 characters each.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Both count toward Instagram’s limits, and so do blank lines. The Without spaces number is only for other uses, where spaces don’t count.
Does an emoji count as one character?
Here, yes: the counter counts each emoji as you see it, including ones with skin tones. Instagram may count some emojis as more than one, so leave a few characters of margin.
How many hashtags can I use per post?
Instagram’s developer documentation says 30, but reports since December 2025 say the app now accepts 5 per post and Reel. Plan for 5, pick the most specific tags, and check in the app when you publish.
Why is my caption cut off before the limit?
It isn’t cut, it’s collapsed. The feed shows the first one or two lines and a “more” link, and the rest appears when someone taps it. Line breaks near the top make the visible part shorter.
Do fancy fonts use more characters?
They count as 1 each here, but they’re special symbols, and some apps count each one as 2. Screen readers also read them badly, so keep them out of anything people need to read.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser, and the text isn’t sent to our servers or stored. Reloading the page clears it.
